The Canadian cargo freighter Manitoulin, carrying 17 crew members, was trapped in ice on Lake Erie for three days before being freed by ice-breaking operations from the U.S. and Canadian Coast Guards. The vessel got immobilized after delivering wheat and was unable to return to its home port in Ontario. Its struggle, taking place close to Buffalo, intrigued local residents and boating enthusiasts. Such events are common in the Great Lakes, but the extended duration and the size of the freighter drew particular attention from onlookers.
We're used to ice on the lake, but not seeing something that enormous not able to move through it.
Her friend, Barb Fleissner, said her heart was with the crew and that, for her, the scene evoked memories of disasters at sea.
