Can $400 Million Rescue New York's Run-Down Capital City?
Briefly

Downtown Albany is plagued by significant blight, with numerous abandoned buildings and a reputation that has garnered national criticism. Following a notable women's basketball event that highlighted the city's lack of attractions, local leaders acknowledged the need for transformative action. Governor Kathy Hochul has proposed a substantial $400 million investment through the City of Albany Rescue Plan, aimed at revitalizing the economic landscape affected by the pandemic. With poverty rates significantly surpassing national averages and stark homeownership disparities, this financial support seeks to address these long-standing challenges and encourage recovery.
The city’s lack of appeal even drew national scorn last spring, when Albany hosted a marquee women’s college basketball playoff game featuring Caitlin Clark.
Poverty rates in Albany are double the national rate, and a huge gap in homeownership between white and Black residents remains an impediment to the city’s revitalization.
City leaders responded with a public relations push, but it was clear to the residents... that something more concrete was needed.
Gov. Kathy Hochul last month included in her executive budget proposal a City of Albany Rescue Plan that would pump $400 million into downtown Albany.
