Drivers are required to carry physical licenses despite having digital IDs, and digital licenses cannot be used at DMV offices but only online through an app.
The acceptance of digital IDs is expected to grow, with businesses and state agencies preparing to implement systems for their widespread use in verifying identities.
Steve Gordon, DMV director, mentioned that while only a few businesses currently accept mobile IDs, plans are in place to roll out several thousand sales terminals for this purpose.
With recent updates, both Apple Wallet and Google Wallet now allow California users to store their digital driver’s licenses, marking a significant step in mobile identification.
