Burning Man attendees call their moms from the playa 'pay phone'
Briefly

From his home in Los Angeles earlier this year, Hopkins posted the phone's number on Reddit for the first time this week, enabling calls to come in from strangers in the default world. About 1,000 people called in, including one woman who rang the phone from Colorado. She gave the Burner who answered a mission to "go bump your butt on this guy's face," Hafiz said. That Burner found their target and completed the mission. "It was awesome," Hafiz said.
Hilarity has often ensued with the phone, particularly when whoever is working the bar prank calls it and passing Burners pick it up, said Ted Schundler, a San Francisco tech professional. Because Hopkins took the year off, Schundler brought the phone to the event this year and set it up.
Using the phone - which works perfectly and can call most countries around the world - costs nothing. That's because Burner Aaron Hopkins ripped out its guts over a decade ago and replaced the older, coin-operated technology with a touch-tone phone circuit board plugged into a voice-over-IP adapter.
"I just died," said campmate Fuzel Hafiz, who recounted the story to SFGATE at the camp's bar this year. "He didn't even make a phone call. He just rolled out."
