After decades of unrelenting increases, rates of sexually transmitted infections in the United States are showing hints of a downturn, with a notable dip in gonorrhea diagnoses.
Overall, more than 2.4 million new S.T.I.s were diagnosed last year, but experts are cautiously optimistic that a resurgent tide of infections may be beginning to turn.
Dr. Jonathan Mermin noted that it's been a long time since he felt optimistic about the S.T.I. epidemic, pointing to a drop attributed to various factors.
Factors contributing to the drop in cases include an infusion of funds into health departments during the Covid-19 pandemic and changes in sexual behavior among gay and bisexual men.
