As Hundreds of Churches Sit Empty, Some Become Malls and Restaurants

Across the country, the number of empty churches and other houses of worship is sharply rising, becoming attractions for business owners due to closures caused by declining attendance during the Covid pandemic and fewer young adult affiliations with religious organizations.
Eileen Lindner projected as many as 100,000 Protestant churches could close by 2030, nearly 20% of existing churches, attributing this to declining church attendance over decades. In the late 1940s, 76% of Americans belonged to a religious institution, dropping to 47% by 2020.
