Towards an agentic IT infrastructure: what does that mean?

Deep IT management layers are becoming more automated and potentially more risky as infrastructure vendors adopt agentic AI. The focus is on AI operating within core IT systems rather than infrastructure built to run AI workloads. Much routine automation already exists through proprietary cloud architectures, Terraform IaC, and tooling for provisioning, scaling, log analysis, and anomaly detection. Agentic approaches add self-policing automation and an additional abstraction layer, increasing room for error and potentially reshaping IT engineers’ job descriptions. Infrastructure vendors aim to move beyond serving AI models and workloads toward enterprises that think and scale autonomously, with varying levels of ambition and caution among leading companies.
