At some point, I could give my pictures to Apple or Google and not worry about backups... several terabytes of photos I have are sufficiently stored and backed up in... the big cloud provider I pay to handle it.
If you were using a significant piece of software, you would need to self-host that software for many reasons-but the biggest reason was that shared infrastructure wasn't a reality yet.
