West Gate Tunnel / Wood Marsh Architecture
"As one of Melbourne's largest infrastructure projects, the West Gate Tunnel is an underground roadway designed to relieve congestion on the West Gate Bridge and establish a direct connection to the city's western industrial, port precinct. Crossing four waterways, the project's design narrative draws on a 60,000-year-old story of Indigenous communities fishing and harvesting eels among weaving reeds. There's also a reference to colonial settlement around the docks and the ropes used to lift things off ships."

The West Gate Tunnel is an underground roadway created to relieve congestion on the West Gate Bridge and provide a direct link to Melbourne's western industrial and port precincts. The alignment crosses four waterways and incorporates landscape and design references to a 60,000-year Indigenous history of fishing and eel harvesting among weaving reeds. Design gestures also reference colonial dockside activity and the ropes used to lift cargo from ships. Project collaborators include Wood Marsh Architecture, Tract Consulting for landscape, builder John Holland Group, and clients West Gate Tunnel and Transurban. The project balances transport function with cultural and historical references in materiality and landscape.
