Tyler Kobick, a licensed architect and contractor, began exploring his creativity in daycare and through the natural landscape near his childhood home in Ohio. His experiences included building a rock climbing wall, an apprenticeship with a stone mason, and starting his own construction company at 16. In 2010, he founded Design Draw Build in Oakland, California, focusing on adaptive reuse and multi-family housing while valuing material culture. Kobick enjoys the collaborative and vulnerable nature of pitching ideas to clients.
From small nooks to expansive spaces, the cliffs turned into my workshop to make forts and experiment with making. Scavenged pieces of wood became my medium from a very early age.
It is a vulnerable and empathetic process, one where you adjust to the client's initial reactions. Actively molding the idea to meet a position that allows both parties to move forward is a wildly exciting experience.
