This "White Box" Living Room Went from Bare to Cozy with One Paint Choice
"Paint plus furniture were the biggest game changers in interior designer William Hutton's (@williamhuttondesign) living room makeover. "The goal was to create a warmer, more layered space," William says. Before, he loved the fireplace and the natural light that came in through the large windows, but "it was a bit of a renter-grade white box," he says. Tan paint warmed up the space."
""Picking the right paint color was super important to set the tone," William says. He and his husband, Kevin, landed on a creamy tan ( Farrow & Ball's Skimming Stone). "We wanted to add a little warmth while leaning into the Spanish bungalow aesthetic," William says. They also added tan drapery to the windows and woven sconces for even more warmth."
A living room in a 100-year-old Spanish bungalow was transformed from a renter-grade white box into a warmer, layered, comfortable space. Creamy tan paint (Farrow & Ball's Skimming Stone) and matching tan drapery introduced warmth and reinforced the Spanish bungalow aesthetic. Woven sconces and layered furniture added texture, depth, and a cozier feel. A large sculptural Stilnovo three-armed chandelier replaced a ceiling fan, bringing drama and character after being sourced on Facebook Marketplace. Original architectural features such as the huge fireplace, built-ins, barrelled ceiling, and abundant windows were highlighted to create a cohesive, layered home.
