rubens cortes arquitectos renovates andalusian tobacco shed with luminous library
Briefly

Designed by Rubens Cortés Arquitectos, the Biblioteca Pública María Lejárraga integrates a renovated tobacco drying shed with a contemporary extension in Andalusia, Spain, reviving the region's agricultural heritage.
The library features a luminous timber reading room with a structural framework of interlocking wooden beams, creating a faceted, sloping rooftop and gradually transitioning from a pitched to rectangular face.
To enhance energy efficiency and reduce visual presence, the architects at Rubens Cortés Arquitectos partially buried the library extension, considering the environmental impact and implementing bioclimatic strategies for natural cooling.
