Five years ago, WJ STUDIO initiated a tourism project in Shengsi County, located in the northeastern Zhoushan Islands. The travel routes to Shengsi include various ferry and road combinations, posing challenges for accessibility. This geographical isolation affects its appeal for mainstream tourism and shapes the design strategies used for the Huanglong Island Lighthouse Hotel. The introduction of helicopter and seaplane options emphasizes the need for responsive design to meet modern travelers' expectations.
Approximately five years ago, WJ STUDIO embarked on a tourism development project in Shengsi County, a remote archipelago perched at sea in the northeastern Zhoushan Islands. The journey to Shengsi remains an expedition: 2.5 hours by ferry from Zhoushan Main Island, and various connections from other major cities. This geographical seclusion inherently limits its appeal to mainstream tourism, which posed a challenge that would define the design approach for the Huanglong Island Lighthouse Hotel.
While helicopter and seaplane routes have recently been introduced, Shengsi's accessibility challenges modern travelers' efficiency-driven expectations, necessitating a design that addresses these concerns in a creative manner.
