Wes Lang's series The Black Paintings reflects a blend of childhood memories, diverse artistic influences, and a reaction to societal shifts post-pandemic, promoting positivity over negativity.
Lang juxtaposed influences such as Francis Bacon's Man in Blue series, childhood monster finger puppets, and the surreal themes of Edouard Vuillard to create a rich tapestry of emotion and thought.
"I really wanted to sit down and make a body of work that shows people that all this noise and all these divisive faces of evil that we're told matter don't have to consume your mind and the way you feel about the world," says Lang.
The Black Paintings, now on view at Damien Hirst's Newport Street Gallery, serve as a cacophony of mantras and inner dialogues from a post-pandemic perspective.
