Juliette Lewis Remembers Her First Day as a Chair
Briefly

In the film 'By Design', Juliette Lewis depicts a character named Camille who body-swaps with a chair, encapsulating themes of self-perception and identity. The film, directed by Amanda Kramer, presents a whimsical narrative that allows for creative storytelling and actor experimentation. Despite the oddities of the premise, both Lewis and co-star Mamoudou Athie found the production efficient and focused on storytelling. Even after filming, the team remains attached to the concept, with ongoing discussions about the significance of chairs in their storytelling.
Our first day of shooting was us holding these positions where they go, 'Chair in, chair out. Now you're the chair...' That was really a first.
Look, it's awkward right? Whenever you start to get self-conscious in that way it's like, 'Wait what are we doing? Okay, right. Back to that...' Then you don't care anymore.
To this day, my production designer Grace is still sending photos of possible chairs.
