James Turrell's Groundbreaking Desert Installation Unveiled for Saudi Arabia's Wadi AlFann | stupidDOPE
Briefly

James Turrell, an influential figure in the Light and Space movement, is embarking on a significant land artwork project in Saudi Arabia's AlUla desert as part of the Wadi AlFann open-air museum. Inspired by the area’s breathtaking sandstone formations, Turrell's design will integrate vast pathways, tunnels, and four 'Skyspaces' to create an interaction between light and space. This installation highlights his philosophy regarding the essence of light, encouraging visitors to appreciate its connection to nature and the universe over the next four years.
I was very familiar with that kind of landscape and strangely felt at home with doing work there. This connection is foundational for my artistic endeavors.
The installation will explore the interplay of light, darkness, and spatial perception, guiding visitors through pathways, tunnels, and chambers.
Above ground, Turrell’s work unfolds into a planetary diagram etched into the sandstone cliffs, creating a unique relationship between the land and the sky.
These elements exemplify Turrell's philosophy of the thingness of light, blending perception and the sublime into a singular, transformative experience.
