Jacob Lawrence's painting series on Haitian revolutionary Toussaint L'Ouverture to be conserved thanks to $1m grant
Briefly

The Amistad Research Center received a $1m grant from the Terra Foundation for American Art to conserve Jacob Lawrence's 1938 series The Life of Toussaint L'Ouverture and support a future exhibition of the works.
The series is regarded as one of the most important and symbolic works of its time, representing the life of Toussaint L'Ouverture, the hero of the Haitian Revolution, who led the successful uprising of enslaved people in 1804.
Kathe Hambrick, the executive director of ARC, emphasized the importance of preserving their visual art collection and archival holdings to make the material available for researchers and the public for in-depth study.
Jacob Lawrence's series on Toussaint L'Ouverture is considered a significant example of his early narrative style, with its historical importance and representation of the American experience.
