"This is more than a new venue location, it's a symbol of how we wish to imagine unforgettable exhibitions of the 20th Century for a well-informed audience and for a new generation of collectors,"
"We got in a room, started talking about all the things that are working and not working in culture, and we're all aligned in terms of how to work together to move forward and innovate,"
"interested in a landlord-tenant relationship"
Independent 20th Century fair will relocate next year to the Marcel Breuer–designed Breuer Building, which Sotheby's acquired in 2023 and is converting into its New York headquarters. The fair's dates will shift three weeks earlier to September 24–27. The Breuer Building's landmarked interior spaces have undergone limited and subtle renovations led by Herzog & de Meuron, with Sotheby's set to open on November 8 ahead of the autumn auction season. The move will allow the fair to support more than 50 galleries, up from roughly 30 exhibitors previously hosted at Casa Cipriani. The arrangement with Sotheby's is positioned as a collaborative partnership rather than a landlord–tenant relationship.
