The south-side road follows a culvert that preserves the former path of the meandering Kanda River. The natural river was modernized for flood control and slightly rerouted into a straight, artificial channel running north to south to improve drainage. The original riverbed was landfilled and converted into a narrow street, and the adjacent land was developed for residential use. The resulting urban fabric features a network of fragmented alleyways with limited sightlines. That compact, maze-like streetscape generates a physical sensation of familiarity and creates a distinct character compared with surrounding modernized city blocks.
