In Season 3 of 'The White Lotus,' set at the Four Seasons Resort in Koh Samui, the production team, led by Cristina Onori, faced challenges adapting to Thailand's rich culture compared to the previous Italian season. Onori emphasized the importance of respectful representation, steering clear of cliches while embracing Thailand's intricate symbolic and aesthetic elements. Her approach involved extensive research and firsthand exploration to capture the essence of Thailand accurately in the show's design, showcasing the contrast between Thai nature and American settings.
Any animal you see in the third season of Max's "The White Lotus,"...is much more than decorative, explained production designer Cristina Onori.
It was certainly a challenge to design within such a rich culture like that of Thailand, especially in striving to embrace its beautiful and intricate symbolic and aesthetic language.
I was very focused on remaining respectful and avoiding cliches while investigating and analyzing Thailand.
Much of my methodology was to start with deep intellectual research in books and visual guides, and then moving on to exploring Thailand firsthand in the physical world.
