Jodie Howard's artwork is inspired by her late-night walks in Cambridgeshire, where warm glowing windows capture valuable moments in deserted streets. Her paintings blend city life with elements from her childhood in the Peak District, seamlessly transporting viewers from cozy urban scenes to tranquil green landscapes. Jodie views drawing as a grounding escape, linking her physical experiences to atmospheric depictions, predominantly through colour. She employs traditional techniques of gouache, coloured pencil, and wax crayons, emphasizing observational drawing, while also engaging in live illustration to capture fleeting moments of life.
Drawing for me is an escape from my busy mind and a connection to the physical world; a grounding experience.
At the heart of my work is a desire to describe atmosphere and feeling, and colour is my main instrument for this.
Using a combination of gouache, coloured pencil and wax crayons, always rooted in observational drawing and sketchbook work.
The format of the landscape will always be a major influence for me as somebody who was raised in the hills.
