Bunkeren House / James Stockwell Architect
"The purpose of the house design is to arrive at a garden and the coastal landscape . The house bookends the garden as the headlands do the beach. The climatic benefit derived of integration with the landscape meant the house is half buried for climatic stability, bushfire protection and increased habitat and biodiversity. The house has hovering platforms of earth and planting."
"The site is more landscape than house and the robustness of concrete endures the interaction with the surroundings."
The house prioritizes arrival into a garden and a direct relationship with the coastal landscape. The building frames the garden like headlands frame a beach. Landscape integration delivers climatic advantages, allowing the house to be half buried for thermal stability, bushfire protection, and expanded habitat and biodiversity. Hovering platforms of earth and planting extend landscape across and above the structure. The site reads primarily as landscape rather than architecture. Durable concrete is used to withstand and endure ongoing interaction with the natural surroundings while supporting planting and habitat.
