alvaro siza expands monastery and culture center in porto with modernist concrete courtyard
Briefly

The national monument Monastery of Leça do Balio, headquarters of Foundation Livraria Lello, integrates Álvaro Siza Vieira's modernist extension, showcasing a visual dialogue between heritage stone walls and modern concrete structures.
Siza's design intent was to create a new landmark highlighting the importance of Leça do Balio in the Way of Saint James, fusing history, architecture, and landscape to pay homage to the monastery's roots.
The revitalized monastery features a courtyard with Siza's sculpture, Wayfarer, serving as a poetic tribute to its spiritual history, while the landscaping by Sidónio Pardal bridges the old and new design elements.
The refurbishment and extension project by Álvaro Siza Vieira not only revitalizes the Monastery of Leça do Balio but also aims to create a cultural nucleus open to the community, enriching the site with art and architecture.
