A user with a third thumb opens a bottle with ease. Dani Clode Design / The Plasticity Lab A few years ago, a group of researchers at Cambridge University developed The Third Thumb - a prosthetic thumb that is controlled by a pressure sensor under the opposite side's big toe or foot.
Almost everyone succeeded in completing tasks with an extra thumb, showing humans can adapt to motor augmentation technology. Older adults showed a decline in performance, potentially due to decreased abilities.
"Augmentation is about designing a new relationship with technology - creating something that extends beyond being merely a tool to becoming an extension of the body itself," Dani Clode, one of the study's authors, highlighted.
