One of the major sellers of detailed driver behavioral data is shutting down

Verisk has stopped receiving detailed driver behavior data from cars made by General Motors, Honda, and Hyundai. This decision came after concerns regarding privacy, specifically the selling of such data to insurers.
Drivers of GM vehicles found insurance costlier or unattainable due to reports shared from GM to data brokers to insurers. Reports included trip details, times, distances, 'hard acceleration' or 'hard braking events,' raising privacy and consent issues.
The practice of collecting and sharing detailed driver behavior data has faced backlash. Despite the data purportedly being from an opt-in 'Smart Driver' program, many customers had no recollection of opting in or felt rushed through the process by salespeople.
GM ceased data sharing with Verisk and LexisNexis Risk Solutions following public concern. The Mozilla Foundation highlighted the concerning privacy aspects in the automotive sector due to broad privacy policies, extensive data collection, and lacking privacy safeguards.
