Number of serious injuries on roads is almost double the official figures
Briefly

Using hospital data alongside garda figures, a study found 18,021 casualties hospitalized due to road traffic collisions from 2014-2022, markedly higher than the 10,687 serious injuries reported by An Garda Síochána and the RSA.
The analysis revealed a significant disparity in cyclist injuries, with hospitalizations surpassing garda-logged serious injuries at a rate of two to three times. Cyclists represented 27% of hospital casualties but only 18% of officially reported serious injuries.
The research, conducted by RSA in collaboration with HSE and Trinity College Dublin, emphasized the importance of using hospital data to report serious injuries in alignment with European Commission directives.
Dr. Stefania Castello highlighted the value of hospital data in enhancing understanding of injury severity and impact on road users, providing new insights on treatment duration and post-collision recovery within the healthcare system.
