Japan can embrace open science - but flexible approaches are key
Briefly

The G7 Science and Technology Ministers' Meeting expressed support for immediate open access to government-funded scholarly publications and scientific data at the meeting in Sendai, Japan, last May, highlighting the importance of sharing research results openly and publicly. However, Japan, while hosting a government-backed preprint server called Jxiv since 2022, has been criticized for the low number of manuscripts available on the platform as of 1st May, with only 326 manuscripts being publicly accessible.
This discrepancy between the G7's commitment to open access and Japan's slow progress in embracing open science shows a gap that needs addressing. Japan is urged to increase its efforts to align with the international call for transparent and free dissemination of scientific knowledge, especially given the growing importance of collaboration and data sharing in driving advancements in research.
