Data4, a European datacenter operator, is piloting a project to utilize excess heat and CO2 emissions from its servers to cultivate algae for agri-food and pharmacology industries. The proof-of-concept, located on the Paris facility's roof, shows promise with an algae module that absorbs CO2 at rates exceeding trees. Future plans include expanding this system on building facades. Collaborating with various institutions, Data4 seeks to convert unused energy from its datacenters into productive resources while addressing sustainability challenges in the tech sector.
Through this project, we aim to transform this heat into energy. Thanks to the biocircular datacenter module, we have the opportunity to create a new ecological and economic resource for the region, and therefore jobs, that can develop with the datacenters.
Data4 claims the R&D project is a response to the challenge of reusing the heat produced by data facilities.
