Data.cdc.gov goes offline
Briefly

As of January 31, 2025, the CDC's data portal is offline to comply with Executive Order 14168, mandating measures against what is termed 'gender ideology extremism.' This directive includes halting research and cutting funding, leading to widespread concern among scientists. During a recent 'datathon,' researchers rallied to preserve health-related data, emphasizing the ongoing danger of erasing critical information from public access. Notably, social epidemiologist Nancy Krieger highlighted the troubling trend of obscuring data as a method to ignore underlying issues affecting public health.
There's been a history in this country recently of trying to make data disappear, as if that makes problems disappear, said Nancy Krieger, a social epidemiologist at Harvard University and a co-leader of the effort.
The takedown is part of a directive to halt research and cut funding, which raises significant concerns among the scientific community about the impact on public health data.
