Meet the 'Moulin Rouge!' designers who created its kinetic aesthetic
Briefly

Derek McLane and Catherine Zuber, the scenic designer and costume designer for the Broadway musical "Moulin Rouge!," have a long history of collaboration and friendship. They were born in the same hospital in London, studied together at Yale, and have worked out of the same studio in Manhattan for years. Their close relationship allowed for seamless collaboration on the stage adaptation of "Moulin Rouge!" where they could easily share ideas and inspiration.
McLane's bold and vibrant designs influenced Zuber's costuming choices. Seeing the intensity and beauty of his scenic designs pushed her to create stronger tones and use different types of fabric in her costumes. This collaboration between the two designers resulted in an eye-popping visual style that matched the energy of the jukebox musical.
"Moulin Rouge!" has been highly successful since its Broadway debut in 2019. The show won 10 Tony Awards, including recognition for Timbers, McLane, and Zuber. It has also opened productions in England, Germany, and Australia, and is currently on a North American tour, with a stop at the Kennedy Center. The show's continued success and international presence highlight its popularity and appeal.
