The U Street Corridor, once dubbed 'Black Broadway,' is seeing a resurgence, embodying a blend of rich history and modern cultures. Lee's Flower Shop, a mainstay for 80 years, highlights this transformation. Owned by Stacie Lee Banks, the shop remains significant amidst the vibrant street art, nightlife, and diverse communities, including the increasing LGBTQ+ presence. The neighborhood epitomizes a mix of identities, reflecting both its historic Black roots and contemporary trends. Through resilience and adaptation, U Street is reclaiming its cultural legacy while attracting new visitors and keeping local businesses thriving.
In recent years it has, I feel like, tried to return to its home value of Black Broadway. It's become more of what D.C. has to offer.
We're really proud of the way the shop is keeping up with the neighborhood as sort of boutique-ish. I think it fits right in with the trendy U Street neighborhood now.
U Street has something for everybody. In a microscope, you can see specific things, but if you're in a helicopter, you see it all.
A 'Soul Brothers' sign in the window probably spared the shop from fires that destroyed neighboring businesses.
