Deftones, often miscategorized as a nu metal band, has always maintained a unique sound and depth that sets them apart. In a 2003 interview, frontman Chino Moreno emphasized their desire not to be associated with the nu metal wave, claiming their enduring success supports that claim. Celebrated for albums like "White Pony" and their influential single "Change (In the House of Flies)," Deftones has consistently evolved in their music. As they wrap up their current world tour, they’re rumored to be working on a new album, solidifying their lasting impact beyond heavy music mixtapes.
"It's all on record. We told [people] not to lump us in with nu metal because when those bands go down, we aren't going to be with them," front man Chino Moreno told music publication Kerrang in 2003.
After breaking through with buzz-bin hits "My Own Summer (Shove It)" and "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)," the band has released an additional seven albums, including 2000's "White Pony."
While Poppy didn't get a chance to tour with Deftones after a planned 2020 tour was scuttled due to the pandemic, the chameleonic singer-songwriter has some of the band's anything-goes ethos in her DNA.
