SoCal man laundered millions for 'crypto kids' who used stolen loot to live lavishly
"Evan Tangeman, 22, of Newport Beach helped clean up and move the money on behalf of the crime group, receiving luxury sports cars as payment including a Lamborghini and a Porsche."
"Federal authorities said Tangeman was one of nine members of a 'social engineering crime enterprise' made up of hackers, scammers, residential burglars and crypto money launderers."
"This criminal enterprise was built on greed so brazen it borders on cartoonish, said U.S Atty. Jeanine Ferris Pirro. They stole millions, spent it on half-million-dollar nightclub tabs, Lamborghinis, and Rolexes."
Evan Tangeman, 22, was sentenced to 70 months in federal prison for laundering money for a crime group that stole $263 million in cryptocurrency. He admitted to laundering at least $3.5 million and received luxury cars as payment. The group, consisting of hackers and scammers, used social engineering tactics to trick victims into revealing personal information. They impersonated employees of cryptocurrency exchanges to execute their scams. The lavish spending included luxury cars, mansions, and extravagant nightclub expenses.
