The purpose is to regulate the industry in such a way that we can close the door on the projects we do not want, said Minister Karianne Tung.
It is associated with large greenhouse-gas emissions and is an example of a type of business we do not want in Norway, Minister Terje Aasland highlighted.
Norway had previously supported a move by neighbor Sweden to ban crypto mining over energy concerns, as the industry uses renewable power sources abundant in both countries.
Sweden, also taking steps against crypto mining, increased taxes for data centers to deter crypto miners, as the industry remains largely unregulated, Minister Tung noted.
