Paul Chowles, a former National Crime Agency officer, has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years for stealing 50 Bitcoin from Thomas White, linked to the Silk Road 2.0 dark web marketplace. After the theft in May 2017, prosecutors revealed Chowles used a mixing service to hide the stolen Bitcoin's origin. While White was initially considered responsible, evidence later pointed to Chowles' involvement. Following his guilty plea, he was dismissed for gross misconduct. The stolen Bitcoin, originally worth approximately $80,000, has since escalated to a value exceeding $4 million.
