Bitfinex hacker receives five-year sentence for record-breaking crypto heist
Briefly

Ilya "Dutch" Lichtenstein was sentenced to five years in prison for conspiring with his wife, Heather Morgan, to launder billions in stolen Bitcoin.
The couple was arrested in 2022 after admitting to hacking Bitfinex in 2016 and stealing almost 120,000 Bitcoin, now worth $10 billion.
According to the US Department of Justice, Lichtenstein and Morgan employed multiple sophisticated laundering techniques, including fictitious identities and darknet markets.
Lichtenstein's five-year sentence is significantly lower than the maximum 20 years possible for money laundering conspiracy; Morgan faces an 18-month sentence.
