Why Polio Has Reemerged in Gaza
Briefly

The old oral polio vaccine (OPV) was shelved in 2016 due to increasing cases of vaccine-derived type 2 paralytic polio, prompting a shift to a bivalent OPV to reduce risks.
Although intended to mitigate risks, experts later recognized the decision to switch to bivalent OPV as an 'unqualified failure,' demonstrating the underestimated levels of vaccine-derived poliovirus.
In response to ongoing challenges, the novel oral poliovirus vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) is being deployed to Gaza, providing targeted doses to combat vaccine-derived polio cases.
Unlike its predecessor, nOPV2 is designed to minimize the risks associated with replication in wastewater and potential polio outbreaks, marking a crucial step in vaccination efforts.
