The resurgence of whooping cough has accelerated to the fastest pace on record in nearly a decade, with 291 cases reported for the week ending Sept. 14.
So far this year, 14,569 cases have been reported, more than four times higher than the number of infections reported by this time last year.
Federal health officials warn of a resurgence of whooping cough, with unvaccinated children and infants at the highest risk of severe disease.
Pertussis cases have largely increased after the U.S. switched to pertussis vaccines in the 1970s that triggered fewer side effects, indicating a need for improved vaccines.
