A new variant of the virus is spreading through sexual contact and affecting vulnerable populations in the DRC. The outbreak is the biggest ever recorded, with tens of thousands infected, and former outbreaks have been common in the region.
Formerly called monkeypox, the mpox disease is caused by the monkeypox virus, related to smallpox. It can be fatal, with an itchy rash and fever. The new strain was identified in the eastern DRC, with over 21,000 cases and 1,000 deaths reported.
