What to know about the new mpox strain and global health emergency
Briefly

Between 2022 and 2023, the mpox outbreak caused over 99,000 cases and more than 200 deaths as awareness and vaccination rates increased. The WHO revoked emergency status in May 2023.
There are two main strains of mpox, clade I and clade II. Clade I is more virulent and deadly, especially impacting the DRC, while clade II is less severe.
The previous outbreak primarily impacted men who have sex with men, but sexual transmission among adults has become a major driver in cases, especially among female sex workers.
Currently, the DRC accounts for the vast majority of mpox cases, with over 14,000 infections and 524 deaths reported, indicating continued public health challenges.
