Italy reported its first-ever case of Oropouche fever, a mosquito-borne disease, on June 15, the first in continental Europe. Latin America had outbreaks earlier.
Oropouche fever, transmitted by infected midges and mosquitos, has seen rising cases, notably Brazil with over 5,500 cases in 2024 versus 840 in 2023.
The WHO flagged the first outbreak in Cuba, with 70 confirmed cases, recognizing high susceptibility and the likelihood of more cases surfacing.
Oropouche fever's symptoms resemble dengue, with sudden onset of fever, headaches, joint stiffness, and usually mild cases recovering in about a week.
