The H5N1 avian influenza virus, or bird flu, currently poses a low risk to the general public in the U.S. despite its spread among animals.
A recent case in Canada showed that the bird flu virus had mutated, raising concerns about the potential for easier human-to-human transmission in the future.
While all but two of the 55 confirmed human cases in the U.S. involved exposure to infected poultry or cattle, researchers remain vigilant in monitoring the virus.
Experts advise the public to take precautions, such as avoiding raw milk and not touching sick or dead animals, to reduce any potential risk from bird flu.
