A respiratory virus known as Enterovirus D68 is showing a concerning rise in cases, with potential ties to a rare but severe condition called acute flaccid myelitis.
In wastewater analyses conducted nationwide, Enterovirus D68 was detected strongly, indicating its spread in communities. This is particularly troubling as the virus can lead to polio-like paralysis.
The CDC has identified that while many infections result in mild respiratory symptoms, Enterovirus D68 has been linked to 13 confirmed cases of acute flaccid myelitis this year.
Healthcare experts suggest maintaining good respiratory hygiene, such as washing hands and avoiding contact with contaminated surfaces, to mitigate infection risks associated with Enterovirus D68.
