US measles cases reach 5-year high; 15 states report cases, Texas outbreak grows
Briefly

In just three months of 2025, the US has recorded over 300 measles cases, a number that now exceeds the annual totals for all years since 2019. The outbreak originated in an undervaccinated county in West Texas and has since spread to New Mexico and Oklahoma. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 301 confirmed cases as of March 13, including 34 hospitalizations and two deaths. Twelve additional states have also reported cases, reigniting concerns over vaccination rates after years of measles being declared eliminated in the US.
Since 2000, health officials declared measles eliminated in the US, yet 2025 has already seen over 300 cases, surpassing yearly totals since 2019.
The recent outbreak in West Texas has spread significantly, prompting vigilance as more states report measles cases, highlighting risks linked to undervaccination.
