Toronto Public Health (TPH) has confirmed the city’s first probable human case of West Nile virus for the year, emphasizing its significance as a public health concern.
TPH conducts mosquito surveillance weekly from mid-June to mid-September, setting traps to collect and test mosquitoes for West Nile Virus, highlighting difficulties in pinpointing infection locations.
Public health officials note that nearly 80% of people infected with West Nile Virus exhibit no symptoms, making undetected cases a significant concern for annual infection rates.
Symptoms of West Nile Virus, which typically surface 2-14 days post-bite, can include fever, headaches, nausea, and body aches, with severe risk for older adults.
