Thailand reported its first suspected case of a potentially more deadly variant of mpox, involving a 66-year-old man who had recently returned from Africa.
Health officials are conducting tests to confirm if the man is infected with Clade Ib, which has been linked to a rise in cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Since 2022, Thailand has documented over 800 cases of mpox, with the virus primarily spreading through close contact rather than being as infectious as Covid-19.
Officials have tracked down 43 individuals who were in contact with the patient and are monitoring them closely, although none have shown symptoms as of now.
