As Donald Trump prepares to return to the White House on Jan. 20, he must prioritize addressing the potential human-to-human transmission of avian flu, H5N1.
I have been monitoring the spread of bird flu, also known as H5N1, and discussing the situation with colleagues around the country, as my concern is growing.
So far, there have been no reports of person-to-person spread of H5N1, though there have been at least 55 confirmed cases of bird flu in humans in the United States.
We have seen mild cases so far, but one teenager in British Columbia is critically ill, and her case shows signs of potential mutations that could enable easier transmission.
