New York sees first human West Nile virus case of 2024

West Nile virus is still present in New York, with the first case in 2024 reported in Suffolk County, where a resident over 50 years old was hospitalized and later released after experiencing symptoms in July.
Since 2020, New York has seen 115 West Nile cases and eight deaths outside New York City, with the virus detected in mosquito pools across counties. Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus was also found in mosquitoes in Onondaga County in July.
