An unvaccinated individual in New Mexico has died amid an ongoing measles outbreak, although a direct cause has not been confirmed. This person was one of ten confirmed measles cases in Lea County, where most are unvaccinated. The outbreak, linked to 159 cases in Texas, emphasizes vaccination's role in preventing serious illness. The CDC is assisting Texas public health officials as measles can spread easily, affecting predominantly unvaccinated individuals. Dr. Chad Smelser urges widespread vaccination to protect public health and prevent further fatalities from this preventable disease.
"The measles-mumps-rubella vaccine is safe and highly effective at preventing infection and severe cases. We don't want to see New Mexicans getting sick or dying from measles," said Dr. Chad Smelser, stressing the urgency of vaccinations to combat the ongoing outbreak.
"New Mexico health officials have not linked the outbreak there to the Texas cases, despite that region experiencing significant measles infections, including a recent death of a school-age child," indicating a concern that the outbreak is widespread.
