Mpox doses to start to arrive in Congo DW 09/05/2024
Briefly

Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo expect the arrival of over 99,000 doses of mpox vaccines this week, amidst rising concerns about a more deadly strain. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus confirmed that these vaccines, donated by the European Union and manufactured by Bavarian Nordic, were crucial in combating over 18,000 suspected cases, particularly as children make up half of the reported infections and the death toll rises, primarily among children.
The World Health Organization (WHO) identified mpox, previously known as monkeypox, as a global health emergency, especially following an alarming spike in cases that led to 629 deaths, largely in children. This resurgence of mpox has dire implications, considering the ongoing challenges of managing and containing the infection, especially given that the current strain is more lethal than its previous counterpart in 2022.
